Checklist
Britain in Pictures was built for Britain. These are the jobs for taking the same code worldwide. Weather and tides already use worldwide feeds. The map layers under “Britain only” do not.
Domains
-
Point inpictures.net at this server
inpictures.net and www.inpictures.net should land on this same Britain in Pictures app. The home page then lists the countries instead of the British map.
-
Point each country host when you are ready
albania.inpictures.net, poland.inpictures.net, and the rest use this same app. Until a country is filled, visitors get the holding page. britain.inpictures.net is already live and keeps the full British site. Leave that host as it is.
Each country
-
Fill countries one at a time
Albania is first. Each country gets the same sections as Britain in Pictures and the Romania guide: photos, guides, churches, castles, monuments, ancient sites, lighthouses, waterfalls, coast, bridges, airports, stations, train lines, bus stations, tram lines, and live cameras. A place is only added when its coordinates come from a real source.
-
Link flight times to the airport’s own board
Do not copy a timetable into the site. Departures and arrivals should open the airport’s live page, the same way the Romanian airports do.
-
Join train and tram lines only where the stops exist
A line is named for the stations it actually includes. The operator’s planner holds the times. Street bus stops stay off the map.
Already worldwide
-
Weather can stay on Open-Meteo
Forecasts already come from Open-Meteo by latitude and longitude, so they are not limited to Britain. Each country file has a timezone so “today” is local. Still check one inland place and one coastal place in Albania before treating it as done.
-
Tide times already use a worldwide sea-level feed
Open-Meteo Marine returns sea level for a coordinate, and the site only offers tides when OpenStreetMap shows a coastline nearby. Check a real harbour in the first coastal country (Durrës or Vlorë in Albania) against a local tide table. Portugal, Spain, and France also need a check outside the mainland timezone (Azores, Canaries).
-
Turn tides off for landlocked countries
No coast, so no tide panel: Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Czechia, Hungary, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Vatican City. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Slovenia do have a coast, so they keep tides.
Britain only
-
Replace the OS grid outside Great Britain
Grid references use the British National Grid. That does not cover Ireland or the rest of Europe. Other countries should show latitude and longitude. What3words already works from coordinates if the API key allows the extra lookups.
-
Leave Munros, Wainwrights, and trig points on the British site
Those layers are British lists. A later country can have its own hill list, as a separate layer, when you want one. Do not copy these three onto every domain.
-
Aurora needs a source beyond AuroraWatch UK
The map aurora layer reads the Lancaster AuroraWatch magnetometer, which describes Britain. Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland need the planetary Kp index (NOAA is already fetched) and a latitude cutoff, not the British sensor.
-
Widen the space-station box to the country
ISS and Tiangong positions are calculated worldwide, then drawn only inside a box from 12°W to 4°E and 48.5°N to 61.5°N. A country site should use that country’s map view. Tiangong’s orbit never reaches Britain; it does cross southern Europe.
-
Give live aircraft a box per country
OpenSky is locked to the UK and the Channel, and the daily credit reset is set to Europe/London. Follow the map view, or set a box per country. The credit pool is shared, so do not switch every country on at once.
-
Drone zones stay British until a local source exists
The restriction layer is the UK NATS dataset. Other countries need their own aviation file, or the layer stays off.
-
Give each country its own regions
Location guides are grouped by British regions. Albania needs counties or the usual photography regions before its guides can be filed the same way.
-
Keep the local place name next to the English one
The first compile uses English Wikipedia so the notes match the British site. The local name stays on the record.
-
Separate titles, sitemap, and legal text per host
robots.txt, the sitemap, and the legal pages name Britain in Pictures and britaininpictures.co.uk. Country hosts should not advertise the British sitemap. Holding pages are set to noindex until that country is filled.
-
Keep the Android app on the British site
The app download and the map shell are the British map. Leave them on britain.inpictures.net until a country build exists.
-
Tag new places with a country
The same accounts can add photographs later. A new place needs a country, or it will show on the British map.
