The pass is located on the route of the Limestone Way, a long-distance footpath that runs from Castleton to Matlock. The Ribblehead Viaduct was built in the late 1800s as part of the Settle-Carlisle Railway line in northern England. The construction of the viaduct was a challenging and costly endeavor, as it was built in a remote and rugged area of the Yorkshire Dales. The project employed thousands of workers, many of whom lived in temporary camps near the construction site.
Despite difficult working conditions and several setbacks, including a devastating storm that damaged the viaduct's foundation, the Ribblehead Viaduct was completed in 1875. It spans over 400 meters across the Ribble Valley, with 24 arches that rise to a height of over 100 feet.
