Eilean Donan Castle

Most visitors arrive at Eilean Donan Castle via the A87, which connects to the nearby village of Dornie. The castle is well-signposted, and the stunning landscape en route makes the journey enjoyable.

Parking:

• The main parking area is located just off the A87, approximately 300 metres from the castle entrance. This car park can accommodate a reasonable number of vehicles, but it fills up quickly, especially during peak tourist season. Expect a 5-10 minute walk along a well-maintained path to reach the castle.
• An alternative option is roadside parking along the A87, but this can be limited and may require a longer walk to the castle, depending on availability.

Access:

• The path leading to the castle is generally flat and suitable for all levels of walkers, with no steps or stiles. However, be aware that the ground can be muddy after heavy rain, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
• Eilean Donan Castle is a private site, and there is an admission fee to enter the castle itself. While the surrounding grounds are accessible, be cautious of any restricted areas, especially during events or maintenance.
• Practical tips for photographers include arriving early to capture the soft morning light and avoid crowds. A wide-angle lens is advisable to capture both the castle and its reflections in the loch. Additionally, exploring viewpoints around the loch can yield unique compositions, particularly during sunrise or sunset.
