The Bone Caves

Location

The Bone Caves are a fascinating geological site located in the Scottish Highlands, known for their rich archaeological history and stunning natural beauty. Nestled within a rugged landscape, these caves offer a unique glimpse into the past, having yielded significant fossil remains from the Ice Age.

Photographers can capture dramatic rock formations, intricate cave interiors, and the surrounding moorland scenery. The play of light within the caves can create striking contrasts, particularly during the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is low. Autumn is particularly appealing, as the surrounding foliage transforms into a palette of warm colours.

Photography notes:

  • Bring a tripod for stable shots in low light conditions inside the caves.
  • Consider using a wide-angle lens to capture the expansive cave interiors and surrounding landscapes.
  • Visit during the golden hour for the best natural light and to enhance the textures of the rock formations.

Most visitors arrive at The Bone Caves by car, navigating the scenic routes through the Scottish Highlands. The site is somewhat remote, so planning your journey is essential to ensure a smooth visit.

Parking:

  • The nearest parking option is at the small car park located off the A835, approximately 1.5 miles from the caves. This car park can accommodate a limited number of vehicles and has a rough surface. The walk to the caves from here takes around 30 minutes, mostly along a well-trodden path.
  • Alternatively, roadside parking may be available along the A835, but be cautious of traffic and ensure you park safely and legally. This option could add extra time to your walk, depending on where you park.

Access:

  • The path leading to The Bone Caves is uneven and can be muddy, especially after rain. It consists of a mix of gravel and grass and may include some steep sections. There are no formal steps or gates, but you should be prepared for some natural obstacles, including rocks and potentially slippery areas.
  • The site is situated on Open Access land, so there are no formal restrictions for photographers. However, be respectful of the natural environment and avoid disturbing wildlife.
  • For practical tips, bring a sturdy tripod to capture the low light conditions inside the caves effectively. A wide-angle lens is advisable for photographing the expansive interiors and the stunning surrounding moorland, particularly during the golden hour when the light is most favourable. Be aware that the area can be busy during peak tourist seasons, so arriving early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid crowds and enhance your photography experience.
