Buchan Ness Lighthouse

Lighthouse

Buchan Ness Lighthouse is a striking coastal landmark located in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Standing at the edge of the North Sea, this iconic structure offers dramatic views of the rugged coastline and the surrounding landscape.

For photographers, the lighthouse provides a variety of subjects, including the structure itself against the backdrop of crashing waves and expansive skies. The best light for photography is often during sunrise or sunset, when the golden hour enhances the colours of the sea and the lighthouse. The surrounding cliffs and rocky outcrops also offer additional compositional opportunities.

Photography notes:

  • Arrive early to capture the lighthouse during the golden hour for optimal lighting.
  • Explore different angles from the cliffs to incorporate the dramatic seascape in your shots.
  • Be mindful of changing tides and weather conditions, as they can affect both safety and the mood of your photographs.

Most visitors to Buchan Ness Lighthouse arrive by car, as the site is somewhat remote and public transport options are limited. The lighthouse is a popular spot for photographers due to its stunning coastal views and dramatic scenery.

Parking:

  • The nearest parking is available at the small lay-by located along the B9033 road, approximately 0.5 miles from the lighthouse. The lay-by can accommodate a few vehicles but may fill up quickly, especially during weekends and peak tourist seasons.
  • An alternative option is to park in the village of Cruden Bay, about 2 miles away, and take a scenic walk along the coastal path to the lighthouse, which takes around 40 minutes.

Access:

  • The path from the lay-by to the lighthouse is well-trodden but can be uneven and slightly steep in sections. Expect some rocky terrain and a few muddy patches, particularly after rain. There are no gates or stiles, but be prepared for a short scramble over some rocks as you approach the lighthouse.
  • The area surrounding the lighthouse is designated as Open Access land, meaning you can explore freely. However, be cautious of potential restrictions during nesting seasons for local seabirds, and ensure you respect any signage regarding wildlife.

Be mindful of changing tides and weather conditions, as they can greatly affect both safety and the mood of your photographs. Always stay a safe distance from the cliff edges, as some areas can be unstable.
